Meet 41 South Rich Nebel

Rich Nebel

Boredom is not nearly strong enough of a word to describe my feelings toward the "typical" gym workout. I was going to the gym out of necessity, just to maintain my current level of fitness. I have been involved in the fitness industry for the last 12 years; I've been involved in some type of athletics for most of my life. CrossFit combined the two and made my dreams come true.

I was introduced to CrossFit a few years back when I began training for my first Tough Mudder. The first workout completely floored me. I was blown away. With over a decade of fitness experience, I had never felt that exhausted after a workout. The hook had been set, I couldn't WAIT to do another one.
The more I learned of CrossFit, the deeper in love I fell. The workouts always challenged me. I found myself getting stronger in every facet. I saw my results translating to my athletic endeavors as well. I found myself counting down the minutes until it was time to workout.

Of all the fantastic things CrossFit has to offer (the knowledgable coaches, the challenging wods, the feeling of accomplishment), there is one thing I love more than any other: the community. Wether it's your first ever wod, or you're dropping in from another box- there are ALWAYS open arms to greet you, to push you, to help you through. They share in your passion. They share in your goals. When you step into a box, you're not another member- you're family now. The CrossFit community inspired me to start my own family- which is how CrossFit 41 South came to be. I want everyone to experience the love I have for CrossFit, while getting in the best shape of their life.

Elyse Robison

Elyse RobisonCrossFit found me in the middle of 2011. I was feeling sorry for myself as I sat behind my desk at work. Years of college and a career had demolished my active lifestyle and left me sitting on my booty day after day. I researched the program and a friend assured me it was for anyone. I took the leap of faith, figuring I had nothing to lose: I went to my first trial class. I fell in love on the first day.

CrossFit is challenging both physically and mentally. I look forward everyday to being surrounded by health-focused people, who hold me to high standards and push me to excel at my weaknesses. I've overcome fears with the help of an unbelievably supportive group that I will consider my friends for life.

I never would have considered myself strong or thought my body type would allow me to do a pull up, let alone lift weights. Now I take pride in my body and what it can do! No, I'll never squat with Mr. Olympia- but you know what? Those aren't my goals. I want to live a healthy, active life while passing these lessons on to people who feel restricted from the lifestyle they want. Someone who believes they "can't do it" because they feel too weak, too heavy, too skinny, or too slow- There are no excuses in CrossFit. Anyone can walk in and complete the day's workout. We are here to make sure of that. As a Jersey Girl, born and raised on the Shore, I couldn't be happier to start a brand new journey with the CrossFit 41 South family. Bring me your goals and let's turn them into reality!

Rob Miller

Rob Miller-In 2007, an injury forced me to retire from military service and find a new path. I worked retail. I was tethered to a telephone headset. I was stuck at a desk. I ate a lot. I partied too much. I put 30 pounds of weight on a frame that already required a new hip. Things were pretty bleak. I tried P90X and Insanity. That helped for a bit, but I wasn’t excited to show up day after day, and month after month, to do the same workouts. I had the dialogue memorized. I knew when I could rest. I cheated the system. I began to backslide. I needed more than a booklet of DVDs and a pull up bar.

A friend told me about Crossfit. It sounded like it would be right up my alley; hard work, crazy skills, and a community to push me to be better. I just didn’t think I could do it with my injury. I tried out the box closest to me and I was hooked before I even had my trial class. The sport completely changed my life. It’s now been five years since the doctors said I would need a new hip. Sure some mornings I am sore, but I will take that over a new hip and a lifetime limp any day.

CrossFit 41 South is the perfect box for me to call home. The athletes and coaches are genuine and genuinely interested in your progress. I am proud to work out and coach at a box where the athletes push hard and often to reach the limits of their experience and tread out into the unknown. Near the breakers of where our capabilities and failures collide, you will find a 41 South athlete striving to be better. My job is to be a champion for your fitness, a tow line in times of trouble, and a resource for when you need help navigating the vast expanse of this ocean of fitness. I can’t wait to see the look on your face when you realize the results of your hard work.

I also enjoy making memes. So there’s that.

Scott

ScottI walked into a CrossFit gym in January of 2012 weighing almost 250 pounds and getting winded walking up a flight of stairs. I had heard from many fire service colleagues about this physical fitness program called CrossFit. My first WOD left me outside afterwards completely out of breath and almost dry heaving. My initial reaction was to leave and never come back again. Right there in that moment I decided that I would take control of my health and fitness. I wanted to be around to see all of my son’s accomplishments in life.

I had never been around a community like this. People were cheering me on to finish and were always there to answer any of my questions. There is nothing quite like this group of people. The minute you walk through that door you will never want to leave. The friendships you develop will grow outside of the box. My days of walking around a traditional gym trying to figure out which exercise machine to use were over. I truly enjoy coaching and watching someone do something they thought was impossible. I can honestly say that I’m in better shape at 33 than I ever was at 23. It’s been a long journey, but I can’t be any happier about the results

Rachele

RacheleI started doing CrossFit in 2011 because a friend of mine was about to start and asked if I would join her in a new fitness venture. Needless to say, a love story began. Coming from an athletic background, I loved the community aspect coupled with the physical and mental challenge of CrossFit. After 3 knee surgeries, the fundamental movements of CrossFit actually helped immensely by strengthening the muscles around them. In 2012, I had my 4th knee surgery. CrossFit was paramount in my recuperation. I love how CrossFit is personalized to the individual and all of the movements are completely scalable or able to be modified. I am also a yoga instructor and fascinated with the synergy between CrossFit and yoga. I absolutely fell in love with Crossfit 41 South, that place is my home away from home; it's my family.

Carlos Santos

CarlosGrowing up, I realized early on that a career as a professional athlete was not going to happen. So, the next best thing was to look like an athlete, and that led me to your typical "globo" gym. After many years of working out in multiple Globo Gyms and getting average at best results, I decided to join the U.S. Air Force.

After two tours in Iraq, I was told by my commander to attend a strength and conditioning seminar where I would have the capabilities to train others to become fitter and healthier. That's when I was introduced to the awesome community of CrossFit. In 2010, while obtaining my Level 1 certification, I had a humbling "Fran" experience and that brought on a determination to become fitter, faster and stronger. Over the last 4 years I have earned certifications as an athletic trainer and have gained experience/knowledge which has taught me to become a better coach.

I have a passion for helping others achieve their life and fitness goals. CrossFit is not just a workout routine, but a lifestyle of fitness, health and well-being that I'm sure to some extent, everyone is looking for. All of the time I wasted trying to look like an athlete and now, thanks to CrossFit, I feel like an athlete.

Jackson Brady

Jackson BradyMy first crossfit workout was with Rich around October 2014 and it was Fran. I had absolutely no clue what I was doing and I loved every second of it, I was hooked. A few months later 41 south had opened and that is where my real journey had begun.
I grew up in south jersey wrestling competitively so sports and fitness came pretty natural to me. I picked up crossfit fairly quickly and it became an addiction. It was not just the fitness that I grew addicted to but the people I met and relationships that were forged in sweat, blood, and tears that kept me coming back for more. That’s what I love most about crossfit, the people and the community. Everyone has each other’s back and its pretty much like a brotherhood. Along with that, I also fell in love with the whole nutrition aspect of it all. I first started off extremely strict paleo and now have moved onto a more zone/paleo approach. I eat 16 blocks a day in case you’re wondering and truly believe everyone’s body is different. So have fun and play around with it is my biggest advice. It is a marathon not a sprint.
In the end I have become extremely passionate about this sport and 41 South. I am honored to coach here and enjoy every second of it. My goal is to better people’s lives through fitness and friendship. I love questions so always feel free to ask.
